New Delhi: Indian batter Virat Kohli played a brilliant knock in the second innings of the first Test against Australia on Sunday at the Optus Stadium in Perth. He brought up his 32nd Test fifty to overcome the challenges of scoring runs amid lean patch in the red-ball format.
After openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (161) and KL Rahul (77) powered the visitors beyond 200-run lead, Kohli carried on to exert the pressure against the host. Kohli looked in good touch, revisiting his prime days, with some cover drives and on drives played sumptuously.
He hit four boundaries and one six to reach his second fifty in Tests in the calendar year 2024. The one moment which caught everyone’s attention was the upper cut he played off Mitchell Starc’s bowling. The ball touched the cushion of the boundary rope before it bounced and hit the head of the security guard near the fence. The bespectacled security personnel was observing the crowd in the stands when the ball struck side of his head.
He donned a black hat, which immediately fell from his head. The person was in discomfort for a while before Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon went to check him. The Australian cricket team physio immediately arrived to attend the hurt man. The play was halted for a while with Virat himself looking concerned for the security man.

Virat Kohli returns to form
After a struggling in home conditions against the spin ploy of New Zealand in the humiliating whitewash, Kohli started his fifth Australian tour with just five runs in the first innings. He was undone by the extra bounce of Josh Hazlewood as he feathered an edge through to the keeper behind the wickets.
Kohli was technically sound against worn out Australian attack, leaving no room for fallacy that he won’t make a comeback in a territory where he has earned ample of accolades. He completed 2000 runs in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, becoming the seventh player in the history to do so.
