Premier League 2024/25: Liverpool, Arsenal settle for draws as Newcastle impress

New Delhi: Premier League matchday 16 got underway after some thrilling actions in the final fixture of the European competitions of the year. With four games taking place at the same timeframe, fans were the audience for some amazing football action from top English clubs. Liverpool had started the weekend with a four-point lead when they hosted Fulham at Anfield.

Aside from them, it was the third-placed Arsenal who hosted Everton at the Emirates Stadium after being in a good touch over the last few weekends. After a humiliating loss against Brentford, Newcastle were looking for redemption at home against Leicester City. Wolves and Ipswich Town were two sides in the relegation zone clashing in the weekend.

Despite heading into the halftime on deadlock, Arsenal were dominating Everton much more throughout the first half. They had seven shots taken compared to just one from Everton that came early into the game. Since then, it was Arsenal who kept threatening the opposition’s defence, with Martin Odegaard almost coming close to breaking the deadlock, but Jordan Pickford saved brilliantly. It was the Gunners finishing that may have been an issue for Mikel Arteta at the break.

The second half was another repeat of the story, with Arsenal having more possession but never being able to break through the Everton defences. Bukayo Saka had a chance just minutes after action resumed, but Pickford was again able to deny his low-driven strike. In the end, the Gunners had to play a stalemate despite all their efforts. Everton, on the other hand, would be happy to share the points after not having the most impressive attack in the game.

Surprising everyone was Fulham scoring the early opening goal against Liverpool at Anfield, as Andreas Pereira made a volley finish into the top side of the net from Antonee Robinson’s cross to the far end of the post in the 11th minute. The Reds were soon reduced to a ten-man squad after Andrew Robertson was found fouling against Pereira.

The second half needed a miracle from Liverpool for them to even give themselves a chance. The first goal for the Reds came with Mohamed Salah making his 100th assist for the club across competitions, making a delightful cross for Cody Gapko to head a close-range shot. Antonee Robinson made his second assist of the day when he made a cross across the goalpost as Rodrigo Muniz found the net with a backheel, going past a diving Alisson Becker. It was Diogo Jota who earned Liverpool their point in the 86th minute with a strike into the top corner from Darwin Nunez’s assist.

The first half at Molineux was breathtaking in spite of a quiet opening spell. Ipswich were able to collect the first goal in the 15th minute after Matt Dobherty’s deflection cost his side early. Wolves were though relentless as they kept trying to make up for the early mishap. They headed into the break with a goal deficit but still looked fearful despite frequent stoppages.

It was Matheus Cunha who fought back for the Wolves, scoring the equalizer from the left foot after Goncalo Guedes linked him brilliantly. Ipswich, though, were patient and didn’t give much to Wolves from there on and made sure they were never going in the lead. Ipswich created more chances than the hosts. They sealed the game in the death as Jack Taylor managed to meet a corner from Jack Clarke at the back post and directed his header to earn his side the three points from the weekend.

From the start, Newcastle pressed the ball and dominated the first half, putting constant pressure on Leicester City. Mads Hermansen was constantly saving efforts from the home side. In the 30th minute, Newcastle broke the deadlock when Jacob Murphy put the ball in the right corner of the net after collecting a brilliantly made assist from Anthony Gordon. Newcastle went into the break 1-0.

Their second-half performance was even more dominating as the Foxes kept crumbling. Newcastle scored within two minutes of resuming the break when Bruno Guimaraes headed a Lewis Hall header from the far post. Three minutes later, Alexander Isak got into the scoresheet as well after Gordon raced into the box and laid it off to Hall, whose cross deflected off Conor Coady. This gives Isak a chance to head in the third goal of the game. At the stroke of the hour mark, Murphy collected his brace, set up by Isak, as the hosts took all three points from the weekend.

Arsenal played a stalemate against Everton as a ten-man Liverpool manage a draw. Ipswich Town seal a win in the closing minutes while, Newcastle collects three-points following a goal-gallore.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
