Pankaj Oswal, an Indian-origin billionaire, is reportedly in guilt regarding the imprisonment of his elder daughter, Vasundhara Oswal, in Uganda, where she has been detained for over three weeks. Reports say that Pankaj and his wife, Radhika Oswal, have kept themselves in a “secret location” as they work towards securing their daughter’s release.
Vasundhara was detained by armed police officers on October 1 during a visit to the factory she had been developing as part of her family’s $100 million investment in East Africa.
According to the authorities, Vasundhara’s detention is linked to an investigation into a missing person, though her family claims the charges are unfounded and that the individual in question is alive in Tanzania.
Her family describes Vasundhara’s imprisonment as illegal and claims she was arrested without a warrant.
In an email interview, Vasundhara’s younger sister, Riddhi Oswal, shared that their parents feel deeply remorseful about sending Vasundhara to Uganda, especially given their inability to travel there due to fears of arrest by corrupt officials. “My parents’ hands are tied; they can’t go to Uganda without facing immediate arrest,” Riddhi explained according to various media reports.
“They barely eat more than one meal a day, surviving on hope and faith,” Riddhi said.
She added that their feelings of guilt stem from their decision to encourage Vasundhara to take on the challenging project in Africa. “They always taught us about gender equality and pushed my sister to pursue ambitious assignments, but now they feel responsible for her situation,” Riddhi added.
