New Delhi: For the second consecutive day, bowlers dominated batters at the WTC final at Lord’s and even though Australia finished 218 runs ahead on Thursday they failed to drive home their 74-run lead.
Resuming at their overnight scored of 43/4, South Africa were bundled out for 138 as Pat Cummins produced the best bowling figures by a skipper at Lord’s (6/28) to complete 300 wickets in Tests.
He became the eighth Australian to claim 300 wickets on way to registering the best bowling figure in ICC WTC finals and also became the first skipper to take five-fors in ICC final.
But after his five-for in Australia’s first innings, Kagiso Rabada came back to haunt them again as his 3/44 alongside Lungi Ngidi’s 3/35 triggered a collapse.
The Aussies slumped to 73/7 until Alex Carey (43) and Mitchell Starc (16 not out) produced a 61-run eighth wicket partnership to pull their lead past 200 runs.
It could prove to be sufficient as only four times have teams successfully chased down a 200-plus target at Lord’s, and only once since 2005.
Australia took a 74-run first-innings lead but were reduced to 144-8 by South Africa at the end of Day 2 at Lord’s in the WTC final. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
