Brasilia: Brazil’s Supreme Court has decided to lift the ban imposed on Elon Musk’s Starlink and social media platform ‘X’ bank accounts. However, the court has ordered to lift the ban if Musk agrees to pay $3.3 million — approximately 18.35 million reais to the national coffers.
This amount decided by the Brazil’s top court has been calculated as to what X owes to the country in fines.
Why Brazil banned X?
The country had banned access to X after it failed to comply the order to ban some selected accounts which were accused of spreading fake news and hate messages. Reportedly, Brazil is the sixth largest market for social media platform X.
According to Supreme Court, Justice Alexandre de Moraes Moraes has not withdrawn his decision to block access to X in Brazil because it said the issue around a lack of legal representation has not been addressed, while content removals ordered by the judge have not been fulfilled.
Musk, in addition to owning X and 40% of Starlink parent SpaceX, is the CEO of electric-vehicle maker Tesla. ($1 = 5.5488 reais) (Reporting by Ricardo Brito; writing by Luana Maria Benedito; editing by Gabriel Araujo and Rosalba O’Brien).
