Seoul: Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit North Korea on a two-day visit starting June 18-19, during which he is expected to meet the country’s leader Kim Jong Un for talks focussed on expanding military cooperation, Associated Press reported citing the state media on Monday.
The scheduled meeting comes as Kremlin and Pyongyang are seeking to strengthen their ties in the face of separate, intensifying confrontations with Washington.
Putin will pay a state visit to the North on Tuesday and Wednesday at the invitation of Kim Jong Un, North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency said Monday without providing further details.
The Kremlin confirmed the Russian President’s visit in a simultaneous announcement.
According to AP, Putin’s first visit to North Korea in 24 years comes amid growing international concerns about an arms arrangement in which Pyongyang provides Moscow with munitions to fuel Putin’s war in Ukraine in exchange for economic assistance and technology transfers that would enhance the threat posed by Kim’s nuclear weapons and missile program.
