New Delhi: In the biggest transfer news of the day, perhaps of the summer transfer window, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has rejected a mega-money move to Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal, according to a report in Sky Sports News.
It is being reported that Al Hilal had offered the Portuguese talisman the chance to join the Saudi league for a whopping £100m. The Saudi club was also willing to almost triple his £250,000-a-week wages.
While Man United always maintained a stance of not wanting to sell their skipper, Fernandes held discussions with his family over a possible move to Saudi Arabia, and his decision was both a football and personal one, considering that he still has plenty to offer in European football.
United head coach Ruben Amorim didn’t have any doubts amidst the uncertainty surrounding the future of the club stay.
Amorim sounded confident in response to a query about Fernandes’ future and if the Portuguese had played his last game for United in their 3-1 friendly win over Hong Kong.
“I do not think so. I do not know for sure, nobody knows, but I do not think so. I think he wants to stay, he is saying ‘no’ to a lot of things, but it shows that he wants to win and he is really good and needs to be in the best league in the world.
“Yes (we can turn down a £100m bid), we can find another way to earn money,” Amorim told the media.
Retaining Fernandes a big win for United
While some fans believed selling Fernandes for a mega-money deal would help United bring some young, talented footballers who will fit the profile of Amorim’s system, and saw the sacrifice of their talisman as a necessity to build the club from scratch, retaining his services is a big win.
The signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves and the potential arrival of Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford would bring freshness to United’s advanced midfield positions and give a less-burdened Fernandes the chance to be more lethal in the attacking third.
