Budget 2024 Expectations: Will Finance Minister announce 8th Pay Commission

New Delhi: Central government employees are eyeing the 8th Pay Commission as the Budget date comes closer. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman will read out her Budget speech on July 23, 2024. The 8th pay commission, if announced will affect central government employees’ pay and perquisites.

Confederation of central government employees’ general secretary S B Yadav in a letter to the Cabinet Secretary of the Central government placed a demand for return to old pension scheme as well as the unfreezing of 18-month dues from the pandemic period related to dearness allowance and relief that was frozen on account of COVID-19. The joint consultative mechanism of the national council (staff side) also raised a similar demand for an 8th pay commission.

All about 8th pay commission

The 7th pay commission was constituted under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2014 and its recommendations were implemented in 2016 under PM Narendra Modi.

The 8th pay commission consultative process is now due since it must be constituted every 10 years.
The 8th pay commission is likely to be implemented in 2026.

What are other demands of central govt staff and pensioners

Apart from demand for an 8th pay commission and return to OPS, central government staffers are also demanding jobs for next of kin of deceased employees on compassionate grounds.

They are urging the government ti fill vacancies instead of outsourcing then to contractual workers.

Regularisation of contractual workers is another demand put forward by central government employees and pensioners’ representatives, the ET reported.
