Mumbai: The month of Ashadha this year brings several auspicious occasions for devotees. Among these are the Budh Pradosh Vrat and the monthly Shivaratri, both falling within this month. A unique conjunction occurs with Pradosh Vrat on July 3rd and the monthly Shivaratri on July 4th. Pradosh Vrat holds special significance for the worship of Lord Shiva and is observed by women on the Trayodashi tithi of both the Shukla and Krishna Paksha every month.
Importance of Pradosh Vrat
In Hinduism, Pradosh Vrat is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva and is observed with elaborate rituals. It is believed that this fast helps devotees rid their lives of all kinds of sorrows and brings peace and prosperity to their homes. Observing Pradosh Vrat with devotion and proper rituals ensures the continuous grace of Lord Shiva.
Pradosh Vrat Puja Time
According to the Hindu calendar (Panchang), the Trayodashi tithi begins at 7:10 AM on July 3rd and ends at 5:54 AM on July 4th. Since the Shiva puja is conducted during the Pradosh period, the fast will be observed on July 3rd. The Pradosh period will last from 7:23 PM to 9:24 PM on this day.
Steps to Perform the Puja
Wake up early in the Brahma Muhurat, complete all morning rituals, and take a bath.
Wear clean clothes and take the vow to observe the fast.
First, visit a temple or perform the worship of a Shivalinga at home.
Offer water, milk, curd, honey, Ganga water, Panchamrit, Bilva leaves, Dhatura, Aak flowers, fruits, sugarcane, and other items along with lighting a ghee lamp.
During the Pradosh period, place a clean cloth on a wooden platform and install the idol or picture of Lord Shiva on it.
Offer water, flowers, garlands, white sandalwood, Akshat, Bilva leaves, and other items. Light a ghee lamp and incense sticks. Recite Shiva Mantras, Shiva Chalisa, and Pradosh Vrat Katha, and conclude with an Aarti.
Seek forgiveness for any mistakes made during the rituals and break the fast at the appropriate time after observing it throughout the day.
Significance of Pradosh Vrat
Religious beliefs emphasise that donating food, money, and clothes during Pradosh Vrat brings prosperity and happiness into one’s life. Reciting the Kalabhairava Tandava Stotra during the puja is believed to alleviate all sorrows and bring happiness to the household. Observing Pradosh Vrat with devotion ensures a life filled with blessings and grace from Lord Shiva.
