Bundesliga 2024-25 team preview: Borussia Mönchengladbach

New Delhi: The 2024-25 Bundesliga season is set to kick off this weekend. Borussia Mönchengladbach will enter the 2024-25 Bundesliga season with an opportunity to improve their ranking from last season. With 7 wins, 13 draws, and 14 defeats Borussia Mönchengladbach was ranked 14th in the Bundesliga falling short of expectations. The newly appointed manager Gerardo Seoane finds himself under pressure this season to deliver a significant improvement. European aspirations remain unfulfilled, adding an urgency to Mönchengladbach’s quest for a return to the top table.

The 2024-25 season marks a momentous occasion as the club’s 125th anniversary and 17th consecutive Bundesliga campaign. Inconsistency has plagued the Foals in recent years but a renewed determination simmers beneath the surface this season. Regaining a place among the league’s elite becomes even more important as Seoane looks to solidify his position at the helm.

As the club prepares for their new season kick-off in just two days, their approach to building a competitive squad will be crucial in their quest for success in the upcoming Bundesliga season.

The tactical future of Borussia Mönchengladbach will be anchored by manager Gerardo Seoane’s. He prefers 4-2-3-1  formation. The team’s playing style has a good fit with his possession-based football and aggressive pressing philosophy. The success of the team has been largely attributed to Seoane’s ability to modify his tactics to fit various opponents and match circumstances.

In the upcoming season, it is expected Seoane will further refine his tactical approach. Building upon the foundations laid in previous campaigns, he may explore variations in formations and playing styles to counter specific challenges. The manager’s emphasis on player development and tactical understanding will also be crucial in maximizing the team’s potential.

Mönchengladbach’s summer transfer window has significantly bolstered their squad depth, providing the manager with greater tactical flexibility. The addition of key players in various positions has allowed Seoane to experiment with different formations and playing styles.

For instance, the acquisition of a versatile midfielder could enable the team to switch between a 4-3-3 and a 3-5-2 formation depending on the match situation. Similarly, the presence of multiple options in the attacking positions could allow Mönchengladbach to vary their attacking approach making it more difficult for opponents to defend against. Development of a strong defensive unit is a task at Gerardo Seoane’s hand as team lacks in that.

Borussia Mönchengladbach had a challenging 2023–24 season they barely survived relegation to Bundesliga 2 and had to wait until Matchday 33 to declare themselves safe. Die Fohlen have been busy this summer trying to climb the table by bringing in teenager Charles Herrmann along with Tim Kleindienst, Kevin Stöger, and Philipp Sander, who made their debuts in the DFB Cup first-round triumph over Erzgebirge Aue.

Borussia Mönchengladbach’s credentials will be put to the test much more severely this season when they start their campaign against the reigning champions. Gerardo Seoane will be happy to welcome back first-choice center-back Nico Elvedi as he looks to snap Leverkusen’s 34-game unbeaten Bundesliga streak. The leading scorer from the previous campaign Robin Hack is also in contention to play after recovering from a foot ailment that saw him miss the majority of pe-season. Borussia was dangerous offensively last season despite their 14th place finish last season.

With the help of Kleindienst and Stöger, players like Alassane Pléa and Franck Honorat might cause a lot of problems to the opponents upcoming season. Alassane Plea had scored seven goals on 57 shots last season while Franck Honorat created 81 chances and 10 assists last season.

This summer  Borussia Mönchengladbach has also seen a significant number of departures, with key figures from the squad either retiring or moving on. Goalkeeper Jonas Kersken has transferred to Arminia Bielefeld, and veteran midfielders Christoph Kramer and Patrick Herrmann have left the club, with Kramer now without a team and Herrmann retiring from professional football. Additionally, experienced right-backs Tony Jantschke and Simon Walde have also departed, with Jantschke retiring and Walde moving to Borussia Mönchengladbach II.

In defense, Mamadou Doucouré is currently without a club, adding to the list of exits. With these changes, the squad’s depth and experience have been tested, and the new arrivals will need to quickly adapt to fill the gaps left by these departures. As Gladbach rebuilds and integrates its new signings, including the promising Yvandro Borges Sanches and Oscar Fraulo the upcoming season will be crucial in determining whether the new-look squad can address last season’s defensive frailties and build on their attacking prowess.

Early predictions: Mid-table finish?

Borussia Mönchengladbach are expected to finish within the middle of the points table this season. They will look to improve their performance from last season and try to make it within the top 10 if they perform well under Gerardo Seoane.

The upcoming season will be a test of both Gerardo Seoane and Mönchengladbach whether they can build upon this foundation and challenge for the Bundesliga title or will collapse to the lower rankings just like last season. Only time will tell but one thing is for sure under Seoane’s guidance they can bring great upsets.  Borussia Mönchengladbach’s upcoming match against Bayer Leverkusen on August 24, 2024, will be an early test of their tactical prowess and squad cohesion.

Mönchengladbach needs to strengthen their tactical approach to secure a spot in the top of the points table. If  Mönchengladbach wants to compete for a coveted Champions League spot the next season, they will need to find more balance in the squad and should try to reach top 10 this season.
