Adequate sleep during pregnancy is vital for both the mother and baby, supporting physical recovery, emotional stability, and metabolic health, reducing risks like gestational diabetes and high blood pressure. For the baby, maternal sleep promotes a healthy uterine environment, supporting proper growth and neurodevelopment. Poor sleep is linked to developmental delays in children and emphasising the importance of rest.

Recent research highlights the importance of adequate sleep during pregnancy for a baby’s healthy development. Pregnant women sleeping less than seven hours nightly face increased risks of metabolic disruptions, such as impaired glucose tolerance. These changes can alter the uterine environment, potentially affecting the fetus. Pregnant mothers may experience sleep deprivation due to several factors like growing belly size, frequent urination, hormonal changes, heartburn, anxiety, and stress.

How to improve pregnancy sleep quality?

To improve pregnancy sleep, follow consistent sleep patterns, use supportive pillows, maintain a dark and quiet room, engage in regular prenatal exercise, limit caffeine, avoid heavy meals, manage stress, and address medical issues.
