New Delhi: Diabetes is one of the major health concerns across the globe. In India, the prevalence of Type 1 diabetes is rising steadily among children and adolescents, with over 30 cases per 100,000 people in some urban areas. There is no cure for diabetes yet, however, it can be just managed, but in a recent development, scientists from China have claimed to have cured a type 1 diabetes patient using a cell transplant in what was said to be the first such case across the globe.
According to Shanghai-based news outlet The Paper reported on Saturday, the 25-year-old patient with chronic condition for over a decade now. She was able to naturally manage her blood sugar level some 2.5 months after going through the minimally invasive surgery. The findings of the research have been published in the peer-reviewed journal Cell last week.
How did the Chinese scientists cure Type 1 diabetes?
The woman who participated in the procedure is reportedly from China’s Tianjin who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 11 years ago and had also undergone two liver transplants and one unsuccessful pancreatic islet cell transplant. The researchers from the Tianjin First Central Hospital and Peking University got the approval for the clinical research in June earlier this year and following this the transplant was carried out on their first patient.
As per the report, the treatment involved “chemically induced pluripotent stem-cell-derived islets” or CiPSC islets to conduct the procedure. After conducting the CiPSC islet transplant, the patient’s fasting food glucose levels got normal and the patient’s dependence on external insulin gradually dropped. The patient stopped requiring insulin injections 75 days after the surgery. Moreover, the improvement lasted for over a year. The woman used to experience significant changes in her blood sugar levels and some episodes of severe hypoglycaemia.
