Can yoga help in dealing with post pregnancy weight gain?

New Delhi: Postpartum weight gain is a common concern among new mothers, often due to a combination of hormonal changes, lifestyle adjustments, and the body’s natural recovery process. Yoga provides a gentle yet effective way to address these challenges. Physically, yoga helps in toning and strengthening the muscles, especially the core, pelvic floor, and back muscles, which are often weakened during pregnancy and childbirth. Poses like the Bridge, Cat-Cow, and Child’s Pose can help rebuild strength and flexibility. Additionally, dynamic yoga styles such as Power Yoga can offer a more vigorous workout that aids in calorie burning and cardiovascular health, which are crucial for weight loss.

In an interaction with News9Live, Ms. Masooma Rehman (Physiotherapist) and Preggo Team Expert, Apollo Cradle & Children’s Hospital, Chirag Enclave, New Delhi, spoke about how yoga can benefit women dealing with post-pregnancy weight gain.

“Mentally, yoga is renowned for its stress-reducing benefits. Postpartum depression and anxiety are significant issues for many new mothers, and the mindfulness and breathing exercises integral to yoga practice can help alleviate these symptoms. Techniques such as Pranayama (breath control) and meditation promote relaxation and emotional balance, reducing the likelihood of stress-induced weight gain,” said Ms Rehman.

Yoga fosters a sense of community and support. Many postpartum yoga classes are designed specifically for new mothers, creating an environment where they can share experiences and support each other. This social aspect can be particularly beneficial, providing motivation and reducing feelings of isolation. Overall, yoga’s comprehensive approach addresses not just the physical aspects of post-pregnancy weight gain but also the emotional and psychological factors. By promoting physical fitness, mental health yoga can be a valuable part of a new mother’s postpartum recovery and weight management strategy. However, it is essential for new mothers to consult with their doctor before starting any new exercise regimen to ensure it aligns with their individual health needs.
