Car owners rejoice! Govt rolls out GNSS toll collection | Here’s how it works

New Delhi: The Centre on Tuesday gave its nod for GPS_based toll collection in which no charges will be levied up to 20 km on toll roads, according to an official notification. Private vehicle owners are expected to benefit from this provision as they will have to pay toll based on the distance travelled instead of flat charges

For this, private vehicles must be equipped with global navigation satellite system (GNSS).  The provisions have been introduced after an amendment to the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, which comes under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The new regulations are called the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Amendment Rules, 2024.

How does GNSS toll collection system work?

The owner of a vehicle equipped with GPS who traverses the same toll road, will not be charged any fee for up to 20 km of travel on this route. This will apply to travel in each direction, according to the government notification. The new toll collection system will be deployed on a pilot basis on specific national routes. FASTag facility will remain in use for now, the statement said.

The Centre has conducted pilots on NH-275 and NH-709 in specific sections. The Centre invited applications from global parties for industrial consultation. The GNSS e-toll collection system will be rolled out in the FASTag system. The government plans to deploy a hybrid model comprising both RFID and GNSS, according to the statement.

Advantages of GNSS toll collection system

The GNSS toll collection system is expected to enable barrier-less travel. There may not be a need for vehicles to halt at physical barriers for toll payments. Further, toll payment will only be required for actual distance travelled on national highways. Further, the new system is expected to curb toll evasion and check pilferage, according to the ministry.
