New Delhi: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)’s Indian Premier League (IPL) title celebrations turned deadly after 11 people lost their lives in a tragic stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday, June 04. Chaos unfolded outside the stadium after thousands of fans turned up at the venue to catch a glimpse of the RCB’s title-winning squad with their maiden IPL trophy.
The RCB squad arrived in Bengaluru to a roaring reception and was felicitated by the Karnataka government at the Vidhan Sabha. The franchise had a victory parade planned at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, however, it was later called off due to traffic congestion in the city. Nonetheless, lakhs of fans turned up at the Chinnaswamy Stadium to witness the felicitation ceremony organised by Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) for the RCB squad.
Passes were required for entry inside the stadium, which has a seating capacity of around 35,000. However, lakhs of fans turned up at the venue to witness the celebrations. Due to the lack of proper security arrangements outside the venue, a stampede broke out crowds jostled fiercely to catch a glimpse of their favourite cricketers.
Stampede occured after a drain slab collapsed
A shocking incident has come to light, which could have led to the tragic stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. As per a report in India Today, sources revealed that a slab that had been placed on a drain outside the stadium collapsed due to weight as large crowds gathered and stood over it.
People fell as the slab collapsed, leading to chaos and panic before a stampede took place. Numerous videos surfaced on social media where injured people, who fainted during the stampede, were seen being carried to ambulances by police officers present outside the stadium. Six of the 11 deaths were reported at the Bowring Hospital in Bengaluru, where the injured are being treated.
What started as a day of unforgettable celebrations ended up turning tragic as innocent people lost their lives. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced a magisterial enquiry into the stampede incident, while the KSCA has announced Rs 5 lakh for the families of the victims who lost their lives in the tragic incident.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, reacting to the incident, clarified that the board had no role in the event organised at the Chinnaswamy Stadium while calling it unfortunate. The BCCI secretary said the incident is a lesson for the board and that they will look to form rules for such celebrations in future. RCB ended their 18-year-long trophy drought on Tuesday after beating Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025 final.
