New Delhi: Johannesburg’s Bull Ring witnessed absolute carnage as Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma went berserk against hapless South Africa in the fourth and final T20I. Samson and Tilak smashed sensational centuries to power India to a mammoth total of 283 for 1. Tilak scored 120* off 47 balls while Samson finished unbeaten on 109 off 56 balls as Team India posted its second-highest T20I total, surpassing the previous best of 297/6 against Bangladesh in Hyderabad last month.
The only wicket to fall was Abhishek Sharma, who was dismissed for 36 in the sixth over by Lutho Sipamla after India skipper Suryakumar Yadav had won the toss and opted to bat first. Who would have thought that Abhishek’s wicket would be the only time South African players would celebrate?
Samson and Tilak pulverised the Proteas’ bowling attack by stitching an unbeaten 210-run partnership off 86 balls. Over the course of the innings, both batters broke a plethora of records and also helped their and their team’s name etch its name in the history books.
While Samson became the first batter to notch up three T20I tons in a calendar year, Tilak became only the second Indian after Samson to score successive T20I centuries. The left-handed batter reached his second T20I ton in just 41 balls – the fastest in a T20I match vs South Africa.
With his fourth fifty-plus score in T20Is, Samson also became the Indian wicketkeeper-batter with the most fifty-plus scores in T20I cricket. This was also the first instance when two players – from full-member teams – scored a century in the same T20I innings.
