CAS hearing on Vinesh Phogat’s Paris Olympics disqualification plea to be heard on Friday

CAS hearing on Vinesh Phogat’s Paris Olympics disqualification plea to be heard on Friday

New Delhi: Vinesh Phogat’s plea against Paris Olympics disqualification will be heard on Friday after the Court of Arbitration accepted it on Thursday.

The wrestler became the first Indian woman to reach the final of any weight category but at the weigh-in hours before her 50kg final bout she was deemed to be overweight by 100 grams.

It earned her an automatic disqualification, forcing India to appeal the decision to the International Olympic Committee.

Phogat appealed against the decision at CAS, the highest court to judge on sporting disputes, on Wednesday and later announced retirement from wrestling.

On Thursday CAS accepted the plea and told her to appoint lawyers for the hearing on Friday, which will be held at around 12.30 pm-1.30 pm IST.

Harish Salve to be flown in for hearing

As per India Today, the Indian government has taken efforts to get top lawyer Harish Salve on board to plead Phogat’s case. CAS allowed Phogat’s camp to get an Indian lawyer for which the hearing was pushed to Friday

Among Phogat’s two appeals, CAS rejected her plea to be allowed to participate in the final match on Thursday. Her second plea of wanting joint silver medal was considered and a hearing was scheduling at a convenient time for Phogat’s camp to fly in Salve.

The 29-year-old had raised hopes of an unprecedented Olympic gold after beating defending champion Japan’s Yui Susaki in the first round, following it up with wins over Yusneylis Guzman Lopez of Cuba, the eventual silver medallist after Phogat’s disqualification.

USA’s Sarah Hilderbrandt defeated Guzman in the final to win gold.
