New Delhi: A 53-year-old man was arrested after he rammed his car into number of pedestrians in Liverpool city centre during the Premier League victory parade. Celebration turned into a nightmare for the large crowds of fans in the city centre who had gathered to celebrate the side’s English Premier League 2024-25 title-winning triumph.

In the tragic incident, at least 27 people were injured as per reports and were rushed to the hospital and at least two people, including a child, are said to be in serious condition. Eyewitnesses and videos that were shared on social media showed the vehicle driving through a crowd as people scatter. While further details are emerging of the incident but let’s take a look at what we know so far.

What happened?

As per Merseyside Police, a car collided with a number of pedestrians on Water Street just after 18:00 BST, creating chaos and panic. After the car stopped at the scene, a 53-year-old male driver from Liverpool was arrested. The tragic incident is not being treated as terror-related and the driver of the car was said to be alone.

Number of people hurt

The ambulance service, which arrived at the seen in minutes, said that as many as 27 people had suffered injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment, with two people critically injured. Out of the two people who are seriously injured, one is said to be a child. Additionally, another 20 people, who suffered minor injuries, were treated at the scene of the accident, which takes the total toll of injured to nearly 50.

Where did it happen?

Water Street is near the Strand in Liverpool, England, where moments before the incident occurred, Liverpool FC paraded the Premier League trophy from the top of a bus. Scores of people had come out to celebrate the Liverpool’s victory and the incident occurred about a mile before the parade’s finishing point.

Liverpool FC releases statement

‘We are in direct contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident on Water Street which happened towards the end of the trophy parade earlier this evening. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident. We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident,’ the statement on the club’s official website read.

PM Keir Starmer thanks emergency services, police

Prime Minister Keir Starmer took to social media handle X to condemn the attack and thank the police and emergency services for their quick response.

‘The scenes in Liverpool are appalling – my thoughts are with all those injured or affected. I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident,’ Starmer said on social media.
