Chaitra Navratri 2025: Ghatasthapana muhurat, rituals and Idol placement rules

Mumbai: Chaitra Navratri holds great significance in Hinduism, marking the nine days dedicated to Goddess Durga. There are four Navratris celebrated throughout the year, including two Gupt (secret) Navratris and two Pratyaksh (visible) Navratris. The first Pratyaksh Navratri occurs in the Chaitra month and is observed with immense devotion and enthusiasm. Many devotees observe fasting for nine days, and this period also marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year, adding to its spiritual importance.

If you plan to establish an idol of Goddess Durga or perform Ghatasthapana (Kalash Sthapana) during Chaitra Navratri, there are certain key guidelines to follow for a successful and auspicious ritual.

When Does Chaitra Navratri 2025 Begin?

According to the Vedic Panchang, the Pratipada Tithi (first day) of Chaitra month’s Shukla Paksha will commence on March 29 at 4:27 PM and conclude on March 30 at 12:49 PM. Based on this, Chaitra Navratri 2025 will begin on March 30 and end on April 7, 2025.

Key Guidelines for Idol Installation and Ghatasthapana

1. Place the Idol or Picture in the Northeast Direction

As per Vastu Shastra, the idol or image of Goddess Durga should be placed in the northeast direction (Ishan Kon), which is considered auspicious and associated with deities. Worshipping in this direction is believed to yield quicker and more effective results.

2. Use a Wooden or Sandalwood Platform

The idol of Goddess Durga should be placed on a wooden or sandalwood platform rather than directly on the ground. This is because such materials are known to attract positive energy, enhancing the sanctity of the worship area.

3. Ensure Cleanliness and Purity

The area where the idol or Ghatasthapana is set up must be clean and pure. The space should not be untidy, and the Kalash (sacred pot) should be filled with clean water instead of dirty or impure water. Devotees are also advised not to leave the house for extended periods during Navratri and should perform daily prayers with full devotion.

4. Avoid Placing the Idol in the South Direction

Once the Ghatasthapana is performed, the idol of Goddess Durga should not be moved for nine days. As per Vastu principles, the south direction is associated with Yama (the god of death) and is considered inauspicious for placing divine idols.

By following these essential guidelines, devotees can ensure that their Chaitra Navratri celebrations are spiritually fulfilling and bring divine blessings into their lives.
