New Delhi: Honouring the services of the Indian ODI men’s cricket team, Rohit Sharma, the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) unveiled the “Rohit Sharma Stand” at the Wankhede stadium on Friday. The MCA also named a stand each after India skipper Ajit Wadekar and ex-BCCI president Sharad Pawar in the presence of Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis.
“I had never dreamt of what was going to happen today. You try to achieve a lot of milestones, but something like this is really special, because Wankhede is an iconic stadium and so many memories have been made here,” said Rohit after the unveiling at the iconic Wankhede stadium.
Rohit, who announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 7, was overwhelmed after receiving the honour.
“To have my name here with the greats of the game and the world’s best political leader, I cannot express the feeling. I am super grateful”.
The Indian icon also expressed his excitement about playing for the Mumbai Indians on May 21 in front of the stand named after him.
Rohit and his wife, Ritika Sajdeh, got emotional at the unveiling.
“I am still playing and retired from two formats. It will be surreal to play when I play on 21st (for Mumbai Indians in IPL) and have a stand here, it will be special when I represent the country here,” added Rohit.

Rohit, after returning from the T20 Internationals after leading India to the World Cup trophy 2024 and hanging up his boots from Test cricket in 2025, will lead the Men in Blue in ODI format.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra CM Fadnavis said that the government is ready to allot land if the MCA sends a proposal for a new stadium.
“Our iconic batter, captain and one of my favourites, and one who mesmerises with his batting is present here,” the CM said.
Days after Rohit retired from Test cricket, his compatriot Virat Kohli also stepped away from the whites.
