Champions League: Feyenoord fans banned from entry in Lille clash over safety concerns

New Delhi: Feyenoord fans have been banned by French authorities from travelling to Lille for the clash in the final matchday of the UEFA Champions League league game next week. France’s interior ministry on Wednesday published an order where they noted that there was potential for “real and serious risk confrontation” between the supporters of both sides’ fans when Lille hosts Feyenoord at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

The French authorities noted that Feyenoord’s travels have often witnessed “public order disturbances” due to certain supporters or individuals claiming to be the side’s fans and displaying aggressive behaviour. The authorities even gave many instances of nuisances caused by fan violence.

The ministry justified their decision by noting that 3,600 fans, of which 500 were identified to be being a threat to security had planned to travel to the city of Lille, though there were only 2,600 allocated for the fans of the Dutch club. The ministry noted that there were 1,000 supporters who had planned to travel food the game despite not having a ticket for the game. The fear is that these supporters would try to “force their way into the stadium”.

Feyenoord are placed 11th, coming with the reach of the top eight finish following their 3-0 win over German club Bayern Munich. They are one level with Lille on 13 points but are divided by a single goal difference. On matchday seven Lille lost to the top-placed Liverpool. Both are fighting for the same finish which is why this game has gathered a lot of attention.

Both teams have won four games, lost once, and played two draws. If the two teams play a draw, Feyenoord will retain a place above the French team owing to their goal difference.
