Chelsea sign Villarreal’s Filip Jorgensen as new goalkeeper

New Delhi: Chelsea have made a significant addition to their squad with the acquisition of talented goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen from La Liga club Villarreal. The 22-year-old Danish shot-stopper has penned a seven-year contract marking a substantial investment in the future of the Blues goalkeeping department. The transfer fee for Jorgensen is reported to be around £20.7 million.

Jorgensen’s rise to prominence has been rapid. Jorgensen was born in Sweden and represented the country at age grade level before switching to Denmark U21s. He signed for Villarreal as a 15-year-old and progressed through the club youth set-up before making the senior debut. He recently established himself as Villarreal’s first-choice goalkeeper during the last season. His impressive performances in La Liga caught the eye of several top clubs with Chelsea ultimately securing his signature.

The young goalkeeper’s statistics from the previous campaign are nothing short of remarkable. In 37 La Liga appearances, Filip Jorgensen made a staggering 144 saves boasting an impressive save percentage of 69.4%. The number 13 just left 62 goals conceded with six clean sheets and six penalty saves. His extraordinary abilities undoubtedly played a pivotal role in Chelsea’s decision to bring him on board.

The acquisition of Jorgensen adds further depth and competition to Chelsea’s goalkeeping options. Jorgensen will likely compete with Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic for the No. 1 spot in the club. The latter made the most appearances (31) for Chelsea last season as Robert Sanchez suffered an injury in December.

The young goalkeeper has expressed his delight saying, “This move is a dream come true, I am very excited to have signed for Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Showcasing his excitement, he further said, “I always liked watching Chelsea because I watched a lot of Petr Cech growing up, so Chelsea were one of my favourite teams to follow.”

As Chelsea embarks on a new era under the management of Enzo Maresca, the signing of Filip Jorgensen is a statement of intent because sorting out the goalkeeper situation was not objective No. 1. Still, it was high up on the list. Chelsea will start their campaign at home to champions Manchester City on Sunday, 18 August.
