New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the world’s highest rail bridge, the Chenab Bridge, today, June 6, 2025. This visit to Kashmir marks a significant milestone, being his first since the Pahalgam attack. The bridge will establish a vital connection between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India for the very first time. Alongside this landmark achievement, PM Modi also launched the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat train service.

The Chenab Bridge, towering above many prominent buildings, stretches an impressive 1,315 meters. Its construction began in 2002 as part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Line (USBRL) project and reached completion in August 2022, reaffirming India’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure in the region.

About the Chenab bridge

The Chenab Bridge is a remarkable man-made wonder. It is designed to withstand high wind speeds of up to 266 km/h and endure seismic forces from the strongest earthquakes in zone V. The bridge is expected to last for 120 years. Its distinctive arch, which contributes to its iconic appearance, was constructed using two large cable cranes positioned on either side of the Chenab River—one at the Kauri end and the other at the Bakkal end.

Many individuals have taken to social media to share stunning videos and photos of the bridge. “Today marks a historic day for Jammu and Kashmir as Prime Minister @narendramodi inaugurates India’s iconic engineering marvels, including the world’s highest railway arch bridge, the Chenab Bridge, and the Anji Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge,” wrote MIB India while sharing a video showcasing the magnificent bridge.

Which trains will cross the Chenab bridge?

Two pairs of Vande Bharat Express trains are set to launch service between Katra and Srinagar, confidently crossing the iconic Chenab River bridge. These trains will deliver passengers in under three hours from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway station to Srinagar railway station, ensuring a swift and efficient travel experience.

The Chenab Bridge stands as a stunning symbol of engineering brilliance and India’s infrastructural progress. As the world’s highest railway arch bridge, it not only connects regions but also invites travellers to witness breathtaking views and experience the marvel of human innovation amid the majestic Himalayan landscape. So, when are you planning your trip to witness this man-made wonder?
