Chennai to get it’s first pet park at Demonte Colony, Rs 1 crore alloted; Details inside

Chennai: With cases of dog-human conflict in public places increasing, the Greater Chennai Corporation has set the ball rolling for establishing the city’s first ‘Pet Park’. The park will feature exclusive walking space and play areas designed for dogs. The civic body has floated tenders for establishing the pet park at existing Demonte Colony park at a cost of Rs 1 crore.

“In the first phase, a fund of Rs.1 crore has been allocated for this project. Facilities are made to accommodate about 30 dogs. Facilities are provided for pets to walk, run and play here. All pet owners visiting the park are not required to have a license. We do not impose that restriction. However, we do encourage pet owners to apply and obtain a license in the appropriate manner. People living in this area have a lot of pets. Most of them have proper licenses too. Therefore, the corporation has chosen Demonte Colony to set up pet park,” a senior corporation official said.

The city’s first pet park was proposed by DMK’s Mylapore MLA Velu as he submitted a request seeking permission under the ‘Chief Minister in Your Constituency’ scheme to convert a park in his constituency Demonte Colony into a pet play area. He also sought permission from the Chennai Corporation.

In last May, Tamil Nadu was shaken by the incident of two Rottweiler dogs biting a mionor girl in the Metropolitan Chennai Municipal Corporation Park. The girl was admitted to a private hospital in critical condition. A few days later the girl returned home after the treatment. The owner of the dogs was subsequently arrested.

Facilities are made to accommodate about 30 dogs. Facilities are provided for pets to walk, run and play. Based on feedback from Demonte Colony Pet Park, the authorities are going to identify suitable places to set up similar parks in more places in Chennai.  Tamil Nadu States News India: Top News India, States News, States News Headlines, Online State News India, State Politics news
