New Delhi: Virat Kohli’s mania gripped Delhi as thousands of cricket fans thronged the Arun Jaitely Stadium (formerly known as Feroz Shah Kotla) to watch the return of the Indian batting superstar. Kohli, who made his Ranji comeback after 4469 days, sparked frenzy at the iconic stadium, as fans from all age groups gathered in numbers to welcome back the prodigal son.
Kohli returned to the Delhi cricket team for the first time since 2012 for their final group-stage fixture of the Ranji Trophy. His comeback match in domestic cricket almost triggered a stampede outside the stadium, which opened the gates for thousands of fans waiting in long queues to enter the stadium as if it was an international match.
Chill paneer and Kadhi Chawal on Virat Kohli’s food menu
A special occasion merits a special food menu but Virat chose to eat from the canteen of the stadium. But the Delhi dasher didn’t order his favourite dish which used to be chilli chicken and instead ordered paneer chill at Lunch on Day 1. Kohli turned vegan in 2018 in order to stay fit and healthy amidst a tight schedule in international and domestic cricket.
According to a report in India Today which quoted a Delhi and Districts Association (DDCA) official, Kohli snubbed chhole poori before the match. He chose to eat kadhi chawal with his teammates and the backroom staff. Sanjay Jha, the chef, who has watched Kohli grow as a cricketer and person since his formative days, talked about his humble nature.
“Earlier, chilli chicken used to be his favourite. Not only did he use to eat it, but he also recommended it to his teammates. Now he has chole bhature or kadhi chawal. Once I asked him if we should order something from outside, but he refused, saying that he wanted to have food from our canteen itself,” Sanjay Jha told Sports Today in an interview.
Kohli met with a young fan on the eve of the match and gave tips on how to become an Indian cricketer. On Match Day, he was approached on the field by a diehard fan during the match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
