New Delhi: Oscar Piastri took his third win, taking his first win of the season following a disappointing home race in Australia. Lando Norris came second, giving McLaren their 50th 1 and 2 finish. Mercedes ace driver George Russell managed a third-place finish, followed by defending world champion Max Verstappen.

For McLaren, the win ensures that they lead the constructor’s championship with 78 points as they defend the title. For the first time since 2012, has the Papaya team won three consecutive races, having won the Abu Dhabi GP the final race of the 2024 season. They are followed by Mercedes who have 53 points to their name.

In his career’s first pole position start Oscar Piastri had a poor start off the line with George Russell looking threatening of taking the race lead before the first corner but the Australian driver managed to defend well. Norris though wasn’t in his finest tune, managed to take second place from Russell in the first corner itself. For the most part of the race, it was McLaren who were in the lead with Russell pushing hard to maintain the podium finish as the two Ferraris closed in on the Mercedes corner after corner.

In the 18th lap, Norris managed to take the second place from Russell after his 16th lap pit-stop put him behind the British driver. For the two Red Bulls, it was a disappointing outing yet again for Liam Lawson who failed to take points for the second time. Max Verstappen was struggling in the initial part of the race though he managed to maintain fifth place.

For the two Ferraris, it wasn’t the perfect start after Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc made contact which made the Monaco driver’s front wing get damaged but the prancing horse team decided not to pit the car. It was Fernando Alonso who retired early due to lack of pace, making it two consecutive retirements at the start of this season itself. For Hamilton it was a positive stint at Shanghai, taking points in the Sunday race as well as winning the stint race.

However, the Dutch drivers towards the closing laps, decided to go for the big move, having conserved his hard tyres. With the second half of the race proving to be better, Verstappen with DRS enabled, went for the overtake in the 54th lap, going past Leclerc.

Driver of the day

Oscar Piastri drove like a dream starting with his career’s first pole position. The Australian driver had a poor start than second-placed George Russell but managed to stay in the first place. A pit stop meant Lando Norris briefly took the lead in the race but the 23-year-old managed to take the lead back from his teammate and without much event, took home his season’s first win. McLaren too had the best tyre strategy of the top four teams and deserved the 1 & 2 finish.

Even Max Verstappen was impressive, having a poor start in the race and dropping to fifth from fourth but managed to retake his position towards the closing laps from Charles Leclerc.

Oscar Piastri wins his third Grand Prix as Mclaren take home their 50th 1 and 2 finish, leading the Constructor’s championship points table ahead of Mercedes.  Sports Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
