Christmas cheer: Plum cakes can make you healthier, leaner and wiser

New Delhi: If you are wondering what is the fuss around plum cakes be assured it’s not only because of seasonal cheer that comes riding on a sleigh. The cakes, that have historically been savoured during Christmas time, are known not only because of their unique taste, shelf life and aesthetic appeal but plum cakes are also widely known for being nutrient rich that aid in over-all health upkeep. While we may have all heard of raisins and their impeccable value in keeping inflammation at bay, there are other ingredients that make plum cakes the most desired.

Health benefits of plum cakes

Nutritionists warn that the plum cake is a healthy dessert if consumed in small quantities. It can also deliver beneficial nutrients to the body, so munch on.

Refined flour: All-purpose flour is a mixed bag. On the one hand, if had in extra quantities, it can cause severe health repercussions but it can also do wonders to low blood pressure and low sugar levels. “Refined flour can balance these out. Because it has fibre and potassium, refined flour may also help to lower blood pressure,” Ishita Bhatnagar, a nutritionist based out of Hyderabad, said.

Go nuts: And we are talking nuts and a whole lot of raisins. The nuts in the cake gives a crunchy texture, which is what makes the taste very unique. But apart from the taste, plum cakes are the healthier option from all varieties of cakes. This is because plums have zero fat in them, they can re-absorb iron from the food into the body and are known to be very rich in vitamin C. “Apart from the plums, other dry fruits such as fig, cashew, almonds, raisins, and even walnuts, is a form of energy for the body. The nuts are known to have ample quantities of magnesium, potassium, calcium, vitamin E and iron,” adds Bhatnagar.

The nuts also have good cholesterol in them which makes it not just a healthy option but also something that will make you leaner.

Eggs or banana will go a long way: Both are rich in protein and potassium respectively. While banana is the best option for vegans, eggs can also be a binding agent. Eggs are also a good source for healthy skin and hair related ailments. Banana is also a rich source for you to build your muscle.

Cinnamon powder: The Cinnamon is known to have anti-inflammatory and anti analgesic properties. “Only a pinch or two of cinnamon powder will also work as an anti-oxidant which prevents the accumulation of free radicals in your body,” says Bhatnagar.

Cocoa powder: The cocoa helps in maintaining blood circulation in the body. “The cocoa powder is low in calorie as compared to other alternatives. It can reduce ailments caused due to circulatory issues like thickening of blood, heart valve problems, etc,” she adds.

Brown sugar over anything white: Those of us who still have white sugar, it’s high time we make a conscious decision to opt for the other alternatives such as brown or even castor sugar which melts in the mouth. “Apart from the sugar rush, brown sugar can add useful minerals in your body,” Bhatnagar said.

It is untrue that cakes and bakery items only add calories, if there’s an option to keep the cake light, go for it.
