New Delhi: It is that time of the year, with the Christmas just around the corner. On December 25, most of the world will sing Christmas carols, exchange gifts, gorge on delicious foods and spend a heavenly time with family and friends filled with laughter and happiness. It is also the day to display various Christmas decorations, including Christmas trees and Christmas lights. Well, Christmas is incomplete without the evergreen Santa Claus, the quintessential figure who brings gift for the children from the North Pole.
Christmas and the arrival of Santa Claus
Santa Claus is a legendary figure in Western Christian culture who brings gifts for children on Christmas Eve. He does this with the help of Christmas elves, who make the toys in his workshop, and also with the help of flying reindeer who pull his sleigh through the air.
Santa Claus is a white-bearded man, jolly, portly, who wears a red coat with white fur collar and cuffs with white-fur-cuffed red trousers, often with spectacles, a red hat with white fur, a black leather belt and boots, and carries a bag full of gifts. He has a deep, hearty laugh which is depicted as “ho, ho, ho!”
Who are Christmas elves?
Christmas elves are small elves. They live in the North Pole with Santa Claus and help him in many things. Those elves mainly wear green or red-coloured dresses, have large and pointy ears and wear pointy hats. In most depictions, they are humanoids, but sometimes they are depicted as furry mammals with tails. The elves help Santa in making the toys in the workshop and take care of his reindeer, among other works. It is believed that the elves live for hundreds, or even thousands, of years, but they look eternally youthful as children.
In literature, Christmas elves appeared in the early 1850s in Louisa May Alcott’s non-published book titled Christmas Elves. Godey’s Lady’s Book made the image of elves in workshop popular with a front cover illustration for its Christmas issue in 1873 which showed Santa surrounded by toys and elves.
Elves are also known for their mischief. They spill breakfast cereal, play with toys, climb up the Christmas tree, leave footprints across the hall, paint nails with funny patterns, wrap things up with loo roll and much worse! However, Elves can also be kind and helpful and might set the breakfast table, wash the dishes or even do the laundry.
