New Delhi: Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra recently shared an unheard tale about his ex-teammate and current India head coach Gautam Gambhir. Chopra revealed how Gambhir once got into a fight with a truck driver in Delhi over a wrong turn. Recalling the time spent with Gambhir during his playing days, Chopra called the former India opener a passionate guy, who wore his heart on his sleeves.
One of the finest Indian openers, Gambhir was part of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup-winning teams. The former batter was known for his passionate character and never shied away from picking up a fight with the opposition players. Gambhir also remains the most successful captain for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) having led the franchise to two IPL titles under him.
Chopra, who shared the dressing room with Gambhir for several years while playing for Delhi, insisted Gambhir was someone who was very passionate about his craft and worked hard. However, he also insisted the current India head coach was ‘short-fused’ and used to lose his cool easily. Chopra also shared an unheard tale about Gambhir getting involved in a fight with a truck driver in Delhi.
“Passionate guy. Very hardworking when it comes to his craft. A bit serious but scored a lot of runs. He always wore his heart on the sleeve. Temperament wise he can be very short-fused. But everyone has a different character,” Chopra told Raj Shamani on his podcast on YouTube.
“Gautam is someone who once fought with a truck driver in Delhi. He got out of his car and climbed the truck to grab the collar of the driver because he made a wrong turn and was abusing. So that’s Gautam for you,” he added.
Gambhir was appointed as India’s head coach after guiding Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their 3rd IPL title in the 2024 season earlier this year. The ex-India opener returned to his former franchise as a mentor and played a crucial role in helping them end their decade-long title drought in the IPL. Gambhir became the favourite for the India head coach post after his success with KKR and eventually succeeded Rahul Dravid.

Gambhir will take charge of his first Test series as the head coach of the Indian team when the hosts take on Bangladesh in the upcoming two-match rubber. The first Test between the two teams will be played in Chennai from September 19 followed by the 2nd Test in Kanpur. The Indian players are busy preparing for the series in a camp in Chennai.
