New Delhi: Gujarat Titans (GT) got a step ahead in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 playoffs race as they defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 38 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday. This was GT’s seventh win of the season, while it was a seventh loss for SRH, which has almost put them near elimination. As the match concluded, GT evened SRH for a unique feat in IPL history.
It can be termed as a huge coincidence that GT registered the SRH-equalling record in the clash against SRH itself, of the ongoing season. Inviting the home side to bat first, the SRH bowlers delivered a below-par performance as they conceded 224 runs for six wickets in 20 overs. What was unique about the innings was that Gujarat played just 22 dot balls, matching the record of SRH, which they registered in 2024 against Mumbai Indians (MI).
Least dot balls played in an IPL innings (full 20 overs)
22 – SRH vs MI, Hyderabad, 2024
22 – GT vs SRH, Ahmedabad, 2025
23 – DC vs KKR, Sharjah, 2020
23 – RCB vs SRH, Hyderabad, 2024
24 – SRH vs PBKS, Mohali, 2017
24 – GT vs CSK, Ahmedabad, 2024
It was a clinical batting display from Gujarat as openers Sai Sudharsan (48 off 23) and Shubman Gill (76 off 38), along with Jos Buttler (64 off 37), shone for the team with heroic knocks, making the most use of the deliveries. To credit the SRH bowlers, they gave away just three extra runs in the first innings. Nevertheless, in response, SRH were restricted to 186/6 in 20 overs as Abhishek Sharma’s quickfire 41-ball 74 went in vain. This was the fifth successive win for GT against SRH in six completed games, including their three wins in Ahmedabad.

Gill on playing just 22 dot balls
At the post-match presentation, Shubman Gill was made aware of the record and asked if he had thought about it while in the middle. “Definitely didn’t plan that. The only conversation was let’s try to play the game we have been playing so far. The black soil pitch is not easy to hit sixes but the way me, Sai and Jos play, I think we have the understanding on how to keep the scoreboard ticking,” Gill said.
“I don’t think we have ever had that conversation where one of us has to be there. We are all eager and hungry for runs and do what is best for the team,” he reckoned. Gujarat has climbed to the second spot, having 14 points to their credit out of seven wins in 10 games. Meanwhile, SRH are second-last with just six points in 10 matches. They next face Delhi Capitals (DC) on May 5, while GT will be up against Mumbai Indians (MI) on May 6.
Gujarat Titans matched Sunrisers Hyderabad for a unique record in the history of IPL, registering the feat in the IPL 2025 clash against SRH itself in what turned out to be a huge coincidence. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
