New Delhi: The year 2024 saw enough of spectacular action of cricket with numerous batting records broken and some youngsters rose to the occasion to lift their teams from a collapse. The cricket action at the international stage came to halt after the completion of all three Boxing-Day Test matches on Monday (December 30).
Sri Lankan batter Kusal Mendis finished as the highest run-getter in the year with an overall aggregate of 1860 runs in 48 matches across all formats of international cricket. He made 490 runs in Tests, 742 runs in ODIs, and 628 runs in T20Is.
Indian youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal was the second most run-maker in the calendar year in all formats, having hit 1771 runs in 23 games at 52.08 with the help of 11 fifties and three centuries. Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nissanka was third with 1696 runs at an average of 44.63.
Most Test runs in 2024
England batter Joe Root has scored 1556 runs in 17 matches and 31 innings at 55.57 with the help of six centuries and five fifties to end the year as the most run-scorer. Jaiswal made 1478 runs in 29 innings at 54.74. Ben Duckett (1149), Harry Brook (1100), Kamindu Mendis (1049), and Kane Williamson (1013) were other batters who crossed 1000 runs in Tests in the 2024 calendar year.
Most ODI runs in 2024
Sri Lanka’s top order batter Kusal Mendis amassed the most runs – 742 runs at 53 – in 17 innings involving six half-centuries and one hundred. His teammate Pathum Nissanka scored the second most runs in the year with 694 runs coming 0ff his bat from 12 innings at 63.09 as he smashed three centuries. Charith Asalanka made 605 runs as the top three scorers in One-Day Internationals were from Sri Lanka as no other batter made more than 600 runs in the format.
Most T20I runs in 2024
Muhammad Waseem from United Arab Emirates made 909 runs in 26 innings followed by Japan’s Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming’s 860 runs as both batters hit one century each in the year. The top four run-scorers in T20Is were from associated nations. Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam has scored the most runs (738 in 23 innings) from full-time ICC members.
