New Delhi: Arshad Nadeem won Pakistan’s first individual gold medal in the history of their Olympics journey. The 27-year-old from Mian Channu clinched the gold in men’s javelin throw event at the Paris Olympics 2024 after shattering the Olympic record with a monstrous throw of 92.97m on Thursday at the Stade de France stadium.
Arshad defeated his Indian rival Neeraj Chopra, who settled for a silver with 89.45m, in the 12-men final event. This was the first medal for Pakistan at the Olympics after a wait of 32 years, and took their overall medal tally to 11 in the Olympics. The Pakistan men’s hockey team was the last to bag a bronze medal at the1992 Barcelona Games.

The gold in men’s javelin throw not only marks the first individual gold but also ends the drought for a podium finish by a Pakistani track and field athlete. Only Mohammad Bashir (bronze in men’s 73kg wrestling at 1960 Rome Olympics) and Hussain Shah (bronze in men’s middleweight boxing at 1988 Seoul Olympics) have won individual medals for Pakistan at the quadrennial showpiece event in the past.
Who won most medals for Paksitan in Olympics?
The Pakistan men’s hockey team is the most successful entity for the country in terms of delivering most Olympics medals. Hockey has bagged a total of eight medals thus far with the first- a silver medal – won at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 after the team narrowly went down to arch-rivals India 0-1 in the gold medal match. The Pakistan hockey team has won three gold medals (Rome Olympics 1960, Mexico City Olympics 1968, and Los Angeles Olympics 1984). Arshad’s triumph is the country’s fourth gold medal at the prestigious sporting event.
