New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah confirmed Rohit Sharma will continue to lead India in their next two major assignments next year. Shah said he is confident that India will win the Champions Trophy and the World Test Championship (WTC) final next year under Rohit.
Shah’s announcement came after Rohit led India to a memorable triumph in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024. Rohit-led India defeated South Africa by 7 runs in a thrilling final at the Kensington Oval in Barbados to lift their second T20 World Cup title. The victory brought an end to India’s 11-year-long ICC title drought.
India will look to continue their stellar run next year with a Champions Trophy and World Test Championship final lined up in 2025. Speaking about India’s prospects in the two major tournaments, Shah said he is confident India will win both trophies. The Champions Trophy is set to be hosted by Pakistan next year while the WTC final will be played at the Lord’s in London in June 2025.
“I am confident that under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, we will win the WTC Final and Champions Trophy,” Shah said after congratulating the Indian team on their T20 World Cup triumph in a video shared by ANI.

India played two consecutive ICC tournament finals under Rohit’s captaincy last year. The Men in Blue made it to the summit clash of the World Test Championship (2021-23) where they went down against Australia before losing to the Aussies once again in the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. India made it to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup unbeaten but missed out on the trophy by a whisker.

Shah went on to dedicate India’s T20 World Cup triumph to outgoing India head coach Rahul Dravid and senior players Virat Kohli, Rohit and Ravindra Jadeja, who all retired from T20Is after the final. The BCCI secretary also lauded Rohit for fulfilling his promise by winning the trophy for India in Barbados this year.
“I congratulate the Indian team for this historic win. I want to dedicate this T20 World Cup victory to coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja. In the last one year, this was our third final. We lost the WTC final on June 11, and on November 19 we won hearts but lost the final. But as I had said earlier this year in Rajkot, India proceeded to win hearts and the World Cup under Rohit’s leadership,” Shah said in the video.
Dravid’s tenure as the head coach of the Indian team concluded after the T20 World Cup final. Gautam Gambhir is the frontrunner to replace him at the helm, however, an official confirmation is awaited on his appointment. VVS Laxman is serving as the interim coach for Team India on their ongoing tour of Zimbabwe.
