The Government of India officially declared November 26 as Constitution Day on November 19, 2015. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced this on October 11, 2015, while laying the foundation stone for the BR Ambedkar Statue of Equality memorial in Mumbai.

Before 2015, this day was known as National Law Day. November 26 was chosen to highlight the importance of the Constitution and promote Ambedkar’s thoughts and ideas.
