New Delhi: All-rounder Hardik Pandya played a crucial role in India’s T20 World Cup victory against South Africa. He scored 144 runs in six innings at a strike rate over 150 and also took 11 wickets.
Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar believes that Hardik can play an important role for India in Test Cricket and can help the team win their first World Test Championship (WTC) title.
Hardik had a brilliant start to his Test career but due to injuries he only managed to play 11 tests and prioritised his white-ball career. He has scored 532 runs in 18 innings, including one hundred and four half-centuries. He also took 17 wickets with a best figure of 5 for 28. He last played Test Cricket for India in September 2018.
In an interview with Revsportz, Gavaskar said that there should be an attempt to convince him to play Test Cricket and if he can bowl ten overs and bat, Team India could become invincible and can beat Australia in Australia and also go on to win WTC.
“Yes, absolutely, they can. I think in the next two months, there should be an attempt to convince Hardik Pandya to play Test cricket. If he bowls ten overs a day to go with his batting, this Indian team could become invincible, and they can surely go on and win the WTC and beat Australia in Australia” Gavaskar said in a Revsportz interview.
Team India played two consecutive World Test Championship finals but lost to New Zealand and Australia on both occasions.
Rohit and MS belong to the same category: Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar also praised T20 World Cup-winning captain Rohit Sharma and said that he and MS Dhoni belong to the same category for whom captaincy is a pleasure.
“There are some captains for whom it is the pleasure of captaincy. Rohit and MS Dhoni belong to that category. There are others for whom it is the pressure of captaincy. I was in that category. That Rohit is relaxed and enjoys captaincy makes him the captain that he is. I love the way he leads his team and his body language” said Gavaskar.
