It is not long since the Kiritimati Island became the first place to ring in the new year. Once upon a time, the international date line went through Kiribati and it meant that depending on the location of a person, the day would be different. In 1995, Kiribati moved the international date line to bring uniformity in its islands and also to attract tourists who wants to be the first to ring in the new year. After Kiritimati Island, New Zealand’s Tonga and the Chatham Islands welcome the new year.

The new year is celebrated last in the islands of American Samoa and Niue to Kiribati’s southwest in the South Pacific. While the day ends an hour later in Baker Island and Howland Island both of which are the US territories, both of the places are uninhabited.
Also, there was a time when Samoa (not American Samoa) was one of the last countries to celebrate the new year. The scenario changed in 2011 when the country changed time zones to align with Australia and New Zealand, its trading partners. Now, Samoa is one of the first countries to celebrate.
