New Delhi: Virat Kohli created history during India’s Champions Trophy match against Pakistan at Dubai International Stadium on Sunday, February 23. He became India’s most successful fielder in ODIs. Kohli made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in Dambulla on August 18, 2008, and has played 299 matches.
Kohli took his 157th catch in the Champions Trophy 2025 match in Dubai and became the Indian player with the most catches in ODIs. He broke former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin’s record of 156 catches.
Most catches in ODI history
Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka) – 218
Ricky Ponting (Australia) – 160
Virat Kohli (India) – 157*
Mohammad Azharuddin (India) – 156
Ross Taylor (New Zealand) – 142
Sachin Tendulkar (India) – 140
Stephen Fleming (New Zealand) – 133
The star India batter has a chance to break multiple batting records on Sunday. Kohli needs just 15 runs to become the fastest batter to score 14,000 runs in ODIs. Only two batters so far have managed to score more than 14,000 runs in ODI cricket. If he scores 81 runs against Pakistan, then he will surpass Ponting in the list of the batters with the most runs in international cricket.
Pakistan set 242 runs target for India
Pakistan scored 241 runs in the 50 overs after skipper Mohammed Rizwan opted to bat first at the Dubai International Stadium. Babar Azam played a few good-looking shots but wasn’t able to carry on and convert his good start into a formidable total. Rizwan and Shakeel stitched a crucial 104-run partnership for the fourth wicket but the run rate wasn’t that good when they were batting in the middle.
Indian spinners kept taking wickets at regular intervals which triggered a mini batting collapse. Kuldeep was the star with the ball and picked up three wickets. Khushdil Shah scored some crucial runs towards the end and helped Pakistan cross the 240-run mark. India will look to seal a place in the semifinal by beating Pakistan. On the other side, the defending champions will look to keep their Champions Trophy campaign alive.
