New Delhi: The world no.1 Jannik Sinner defeated Alexander Zverev in the Australian Open men’s singles final at the Rod Laver Arena on Sunday, January 26. The defending champion dismantled the world no.2 in three straight sets to win his third Grand Slam of the career and second consecutive Australian Open title.

Despite the German’s brilliant efforts, Sinner dominated the match and won it by 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. Only three other men’s players have managed to achieve this milestone on Rod Laver Arena since the turn of the century — Andre Agassi, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

The Italian dominated the game and kept holding his serves to perfection. He broke the Zverev on game eight and took a 5-3 lead which proved decisive and Sinner won the first set by 6-3. The world no.2 looked to make a comeback in the second and had a couple of chances to break the defending champion but he failed to do that and inflict a break point.

The second set went into a tiebreaker after the world no.1 held the two serves to stay in the set. He then controlled the game and won the second set by 7-6 (7-4). In the third set, Zverev looked tired and was broken two times with the defending champion taking a 4-2 lead and then holding his one to lead 5-2. The German managed to hold one but could not break Sinner as the Italian took the third set by 6-3 on his first championship point and won the title.
After clinching the title, Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal congratulated Sinner for lifting the Australian Open trophy for the second consecutive time.

“Keep believing in yourself. Whoever is involved in the sport knows how strong you are. I wish you all the best. Talking about my team, we worked a lot to be in this position. It’s an amazing feeling to share this moment with all of you. It’s amazing to achieve these things but also to share this with you guys” Sinner said.

Sinner also praised his outgoing coach Darren Cahill who will retire at the end of the season and said that it’s his last Australian Open as a coach and he’s very happy to share the trophy with him.
