Despite such crimes, he was convicted of kidnapping and torture in 2001. He got a lengthy sentence but was never convicted of murder. He died of a heart attack about one year after his convictions in two cases.
How did he torture his victims?
We won’t go into much detail about this for the benefit of the readers. He sexually tortured his victims using whips, chains, blades, shock machines, and saws, among other things. He had a torture room and a soundproof cargo trailer located outside New Mexico’s Elephant Butte where he lived. He called it the ‘Toy Box’. It is believed that he spent $100,000 on the trailer, fitting it with sex toys and torture devices.
Ray had a partner named in the crimes named Cindy Hendy who was fleeing convictions on grand theft and drug charges when they met. They became romantic partners and bonded over their shared violent sexual fantasies. Ray reportedly told his captives to give sexual services to Hendy also. Notably, Ray was divorced four times and had two children with one of them, his daughter Glenda ‘Jesse’ Jean Ray becoming his accomplice. Every year, Ray used to kidnap about four or five women and hold each of them captive for around two to three months, sexually abusing and torturing them. Later, to erase their memories and before abandoning them, he would drug them with barbiturates. Notably, while the FBI sent 100 agents to examine Ray’s property and surroundings after his arrest, they could not find identifiable human remains.
