New Delhi: A day after earning his maiden Test call-up for Australia, young opener Sam Konstas was sent packing on a duck during his team Sydney Thunder’s clash against Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 on Saturday. Konstas earned his maiden call-up in the Australian Test squad for the remaining two Test matches against India in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024 -25.
The 19-year-old talented opener, who was ignored in the Test squad at the start of the series, has been picked after the Australian selectors dropped Nathan McSweeney, who failed to impress in the first three matches against the visitors. Konstas is expected to take McSweeney’s place in the XI and might open for Australia in the 4th Test against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) which gets underway on Thursday, December 26.
All eyes were on the 19-year-old when he took the field against Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League on Saturday. The right-hander opened the innings for Thunder with David Warner and failed to get off the mark. He was dismissed on a three-ball duck by West Indies spinner Akeal Hossein, who cleaned him up with a brilliant delivery.

Konstas, who has been in great form in domestic cricket of late, had headed into the crucial clash against the Sixers on the back of a half-century against Adelaide Strikers in the BBL 2024-25. The 19-year-old played a brilliant knock of 56 runs to help his team clinch a 2-wicket victory in the game. He was expected to continue his fine form against the Sixers on Saturday but failed to deliver.
Australia make multiple changes in squad for 4th and 5th Tests against India
Australia made multiple changes as they announced their squad for the 4th and 5th Tests against India on Friday. While Konstas was included in the squad in place of McSweeney, Jhye Richardson and Sean Abbott have been added to the squad as covers for injured pacer Josh Hazlewood. The Aussie selectors have also added all-rounder Beau Webster to the squad for the remaining two Test matches against Rohit Sharma’s men.
The five-match series is currently tied at 1-1 after the third Test at the Gabba ended in a draw. Both teams will square off in the Boxing Day Test at the MCG starting Thursday, December 26.
