Defending champ Carlos Alcaraz sails into third round of Wimbledon

New Delhi: Reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz moved into the third round of Wimbledon with a 7-6 (7/5), 6-2, 6-2 victory over Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic on Wednesday.

The third seed took some time to seize control of the proceedings on Centre Court, needing a tie-break to win the first set. But once he took the first set he conceded only four more games after taking the first set on a tie-break.

Vukic served for the first set at 6-5 but couldn’t win the match and it proved costly as Alcaraz broke him two time in the second set and twice more in the third set.

The Spaniard won in one hour, 48 minutes as he continues in his bid to be only the sixth man to win the French Open and Wimbledon titles in the same year.

He will next face American No. 29 Frances Tiafoe, who defeated Borna Coric 7-6 (5), 6-1, 6-3.

Former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev dropped the first set and negotiated two set points in the second to overcome Alexandre Muller of France 6-7 (3/7), 7-6 (7/4), 6-4, 7-5 while Fabio Fognini knocked out eighth-seeded Casper Ruud 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (1/7), 6-3.

Gauff moves into third round

American Coco Gauff defeated qualifier Anca Todoni 6-2, 6-1 to zoom into the third round.

“This is the court where I first started here at Wimbledon. Court 1 is always a special place for me to play on. I do think I could have played cleaner at some moments,” she said after her win.

“I just realised that, yes, what I do I’m very passionate about, but it’s not ever that serious and sometimes the world can make you feel like there’s so much pressure, there’s so much expectation,” she said. “At the end of the (day), it’s a game. It’s sport.”

Meanwhile, No. 11 Danielle Collins beat Clara Tauson 6-3, 7-6 (4) in the first round, after having her match suspended on Tuesday night at 4-4 in the second set.

No. 20 Beatriz Haddad Maia progressed to the third round with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Magdalena Frech.
