New Delhi: Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali has reacted to countrymate Harry Brook likely to face a suspension period in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after pulling out from the IPL 2025 season. On March 9, the England batter took to his social media platforms to announce that he won’t be available to play for Delhi Capitals in the IPL this year, citing national duty as the priority.
Although the England national team will play their next international fixture on May 22, just three days before the final of IPL 2025, Brook wanted fully commit his time to prepare for the one-off Test match against Zimbabwe followed by India Test series and the year-ender Ashes. Considering the hectic schedule in the calendar year, the Yorkshire player contemplated of keeping himself charge in this two-month window.
However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) brought up a rule, wherein an overseas players cannot pull out from the IPL season after being purchased by an IPL team in the auction. In case of breach of this rule, the player would be slapped with a two-year further ban from entering the IPL auction. This means Brook won’t be able to participate in the competition till IPL 2027.
Moeen Ali’s Reaction & Support for BCCI’s Decision
Although there is no official release made by the BCCI or the IPL governing council on Brook’s punishment, a report from the Indian Express suggests that the Indian cricket board has officially communicated to its counterpart England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) over Brook getting banned under the new policy.
Reacting to the unannounced ban of the England middle order batter, Moeen, who will feature in defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders’ squad in the upcoming season,
“It’s not [harsh] though, I kinda agree with it (Brook’s ban),” Moeen said on the Beard Before Cricket podcast.
“It’s messed his team [Delhi Capitals] up, him pulling him out. Any team that loses Harry Brook is messed up a bit, and they’ve got to now rejig everything and stuff like that.”
“Forget him for a second, if you do pull out, the rule is you get a ban, unless it’s a family reason or injury. If it’s injury, it’s different. But I think if you just pull out, then it’s… I kinda agree with it [the rules],” the 37-year-old added.
