Hyderabad:  Vijay Kumar, from Secunderabad, Telangana, the father of a UPSC aspirant, Tanya Soni, is mourning the loss of his eldest daughter in a tragic accident in Delhi.

Tanya Soni is one of the three students who died on Saturday after being trapped in a flooded basement of RAU’s IAS Study Circle in Rajender Nagar, Central Delhi, when a drain burst during heavy rain. She was studying at the centre for the last one month after completing her graduation in BA political science.

Kumar, who works as a deputy general manager with Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) was on his way to Lucknow with his wife and another daughter when they received the devastating news of her death. They flew to Delhi after de-boarding the train at Nagpur, he said. The family was settled in Mancherial over the last 25 years.

Speaking to PTI, he said that cracking UPSC exam was always her dream. “Tanya had completed her graduation in Delhi and was preparing for UPSC there. She had a lot of interest since her childhood (in cracking UPSC). She was my eldest and had big dreams. We are troubled thinking about the way she died. We are devastated. Don’t know what to do.”

Kumar said that the family received the body and her last rites will be held in their native Bihar.

Three UPSC aspirants – Tanya Soni, Shreya Yadav and Nivin Dalwin were trapped inside the library, which was located inside a basement and was flooded due to sudden evening downpour.

Telangana CM Revanth Reddy and Union Minister G Kishan Reddy expressed condolences to the family over the loss.
