Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is bracing for a heavy downpour in the next five days as per the Meteorological Department that has forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall in the northern districts of the state.
The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall in all northern districts including Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod and Wayanad where an orange alert is being issued till July 16th.
Meanwhile, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram and Wayanad are under yellow alert.
Orange alert in districts
July 14 – Kannur, Kasaragod
July 15 – Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod
July 16 – Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod
An orange alert indicates very heavy rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm within 24 hours.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Goa. The alert indicates the possibility of significant precipitation and potential disruptions. In a press release dated July 12, the IMD forecasted heavy rainfall in Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Telangana until July 16. Andhra Pradesh is expected to experience downpours on Sunday and Monday.
The IMD bulletin noted, “Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms and lightning very likely over Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh; scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall over Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan” over the next four days. It adds, “Isolated to scattered rainfall likely over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad and West Rajasthan” during the same period.
Families evacuated following cracks due to heavy rains in Kasargod
Six families at Konnakkad Moothadi colony in Balal panchayat in Kasaragod were moved following the discovery of a crack on the ground on Friday evening. The crack is caused by the recent heavy rains.
The affected residents, totalling 22, were shifted to the Kasaba Government Higher Secondary School at Maloth. Balal panchayat president Raju Kattakkayam along with officials and the police coordinated the evacuation efforts.
In view of the adverse weather conditions, fisherman are advised not to venture into the sea off the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coasts till July 16th.
