Dengue cases on rise: Doctors shares symptoms of infection in children, lists do’s and dont’s

New Delhi: With the onset of monsoons, dengue cases have also surged in many regions of India, including Bengaluru, parts of Delhi, Ghaziabad and Gurugram. Since January, Delhi reported over 200 dengue cases, while Bengaluru reported its first dengue death this year and recorded over 1000 cases. According to reports, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagaria Palike (BBMP) chief also tested positive for the virus.

The rainy season works as a catalyst in the rise in dengue and malaria cases, as the stagnant water becomes the breeding ground for mosquitoes. Dengue is a vector-borne viral disease of an expanding geographical range and increasing incidences. A majority of dengue cases are also reported in children under the age of 15 years of age. Dengue is a viral disease and its symptoms range from mild fever to severe disease with plasma leakage and shock. Infants and children with secondary heterologous dengue infections are most at risk for chronic dengue infection. But many parents would wonder how to understand that their children have dengue.

Dengue in Children

Dr Paras Kumar, Consultant, Neonatology and Pediatrics at Sparsh Women and Children Hospital told News9, “Parents must keep a close look at their children for early signs of dengue, such as high fever, headache or pain/discomfort behind the eyes, muscle and joint pains, rash, tiredness and mild bleeding that can take place in gums or nose.

Dengue symptoms in children and preventive tips

Symptoms that shouldn’t be ignored by the parents is when the child begins vomiting or complains of unexplainable pain in the abdominal region along with rapid breathing and extreme fatigue. According to Dr Kumar, “At home, ensure children use mosquito repellents, and protective creams, wear fully-covered clothing, and sleep under mosquito nets. Keep windows and doors closed to prevent mosquito entry. Regularly eliminate standing water in containers, pots, and where mosquitoes breed.”
