Derogatory or not? Know the meaning behind Travis Head’s viral celebration at MCG

New Delhi: Australian batter Travis Head has been a prolific run-scorer for the Men from down under over the last three years. He has scored the most runs in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against India. The South Australian batter has amassed 410 runs at an average of 58.57 on the back of two centuries.

Though Head didn’t perform well with the bat in the fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), he delivered with the ball by getting the crucial wicket of Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant in the second innings to prevent him from repeating the heroics of Gabba (in 2021). Just after dismissing Pant, Head placed one of his index finger into the other hand, which was rounded into a ‘O’ shape.

However, Head’s celebration has triggered a section of cricket viewers as they found it to be obnoxious. Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sindhu called out the celebration as a caustic conduct which insulted the whole country, and asked for strict punishment on the player.

It is OK when Whites do it but when BROWNS do the same, then WHITES starts crying. 😝

What was the message of Travis Head’s viral celebration?

Travis Head has explained that his gestured made after the dismissal of Pant was to indicate that his finger was on the ice. In an interaction with Triple M Radio after the completion of the MCG Test, the 31-year-old explained that he put his finger on the ice to be ready to bowl for the next match. He further mentioned that he wasn’t expecting to bowl in the match and felt the real opportunity would come in Galle (against Sri Lanka in January 2025).

He bowled only five overs in the match and conceded 14 runs from them. Australian pacers Pat Cummins and Scott Boland claimed three wicket each while Nathan Lyon returned with two dismissals. Mitchell Starc removed Indian batter Virat Kohli as Australia won by 184 runs to take a 2-1 lead.
