New Delhi: We had some exciting games this weekend as DFB-Pokal headed towards the next set of games in matchday one. Goals were scored, tackles were made and fans truly witnessed few of the most exciting games of German football. There were certain shocks while the favourites also had their say by paving their way to the next round of DFB-Pokal. Here are the results from the games that were played on 17th August, and a look at how the winning teams managed to progress through to the next round.
FC Erzgebirge Aue vs Borussia Monchengladbach
Erzgebirge Aue and Borussia Monchengladbach kicked off Saturday’s matchday as it was the Die Fohlen who came up with the victory as Erzgebirge couldn’t capitalise on their early lead that was provided by Mika Clausen in the 8th minute of the game. The 3.Liga hosts got off to a very exciting start, surprising the five-time Bundesliga winners early on. Borys Tashchy darted down the left wing, and the Ukrainian crossed for Mika Clausen to volley in despite Joe Scally’s best effort to foul. Eventually, Gladbach took control of the game, and Kevin Stöger looked deadly.
Franck Honorat tied the score at one minute and thirty seconds later. Barylla blocked the Frenchman’s initial attempt, but he was unstoppable with a stunning overhead kick in response. Martin Männel’s fingers denied Julian Weigl’s attempt to complete the first-half comeback from the penalty spot. Gladbach made the hosts pay shortly after the half. Clausen lost control, which gave Pléa and Reitz the opportunity to team up and sneak in Luca Netz. The talented full-back sidestepped Burghardt’s tackle and unleashed a fantastic shot into the bottom right corner. In the seventieth minute, Alassane Pléa participated in the deed himself. To allay any worries of a cup shock, he selected the bottom left corner, as Gladbach go on to the next round.
TSV Schott Mainz vs Greuther Fürth
In the eighth minute, the 2.Bundesliga favorites broke the tie. Jomaine Consbruch attempted to play in Roberto Massimo, but TSV goalkeeper Robin Balters stopped the winger. Denis Srbeny, fortunately for Die Kleeblätter, grabbed the loose ball and rattled the net. As the game approached the end, Schott Mainz put forth a lot of numbers in an attempt to save their Pokal hopes. Ultimately, the courageous underdogs suffered a setback during the counterattack. Gans’ pockets were grabbed by Branimir Hrgota in order to free Massimo. The former Stuttgart player generously squared up for fellow new recruit Marlon Mustapha, who received a regular tap-in.
FC Phönix Lübeck vs Borussia Dortmund
Groß and Anton quickly provided evidence to support his summer acquisitions. In the third, the late bloomer for the German national team and former Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Groß expertly set up Anton with a corner kick. Anton had vanished from everyone’s view in blue, making the 1-0 victory all too simple. Dortmund thereafter took control of the match.
The new constellation’s fluid play created many further scoring opportunities before the BVB captain formally increased the lead from the spot in the 31st. At the halfway point, Adeyemi made the contact in the box on a penalty call that was harsh but still accurate. After the second goal, Brandt started to appear really animated. In first-half stoppage time, the 28-year-old earned a well-earned 3-0 victory after going close to scoring the third goal twice. With a beautiful high ball over the Lübeck ranks, Groß picked up his second assist of the evening.
At the hour-mark, Emanuel Adou, a former Hamburger SV academy player, banged the ball against the goal frame. The BVB subs would arrive after two minutes. Yan Couto, the recently signed right-back, had a fantastic run, capping it off with a pass to Julien Duranville in the 62nd minute. With an unstoppable 4-1 lead and his first goal for the Dortmund seniors, Duranville slid the ball past Lübeck goalkeeper Carl Leonard.
VfL Osnabrück vs SC Freiburg
In the thirty-first minute, a quick counterattack by the traveling Breisgauers finally broke through the valiant Osnabrück rearguard. Even though he was just eighteen, Bruno Ogbus traversed the field like an experienced player towards Lucas Höler, whose sophisticated instep finish completed a brilliant move. In the next assault, Grifo slid past defenders to shoot into the lower right corner, doubling Freiburg’s advantage.
With less than 25% of the game left, the cup tie was settled. The highlight of Osnabrück’s afternoon came when goalie David Richter saw Junior Adamu of Freiburg ricochet off his first save and into the net. Before the final whistle blew, the Austrian striker had made it a brace by grabbing Höfler’s header that was heading toward goal.
Rot Weiss Essen vs RB Leipzig
Within the first minute, the North Rhine-Westphalia 3.Liga team started the dream. Ramien Safi maintained composure to hit the bottom corner after Torben Müsel’s inch-perfect ball split the defense, giving Leipzig the impression of being disorganized from the start.
Amadou Haidara scored from the right to the back post, ending the lead’s brief existence. Benjamin Šeško, with acres of room at his disposal, went to the net at the back post. Five minutes before the half, the comeback was accomplished. This time, Šeško trailed behind and generously squared up to Openda, causing the Belgian to reel in joy.
In the second half, Marco Rose’s team kept getting opportunities. Rot Weiss Essen survived thanks to a little erroneous finish from Openda, while Jakob Golz collected the Belgian’s gamble. Die Roten Bullen, fortunately, had Xavi Simons as a secret weapon under their sleeves. The Dutchman gave Golz no chance in the 84th minute when he set up new signing Nusa and scored the goal himself after a brilliant slalom around Kraulitch.
Villingen vs Heidenheim
The Regionalliga Südwest team fought valiantly in the first half and were maybe unfortunate to have to walk into the changing rooms behind schedule. A minute before the whistle of the arbitrator blew, Heidenheim broke the tie. Scienza located Wanner, but Hoxha turned the child away. Maximilian Breunig drove home after Beck’s rebound was rejected a third time.
After the interval, Heidenheim did not lose any time in building an insurmountable advantage. After some excellent effort down the left by Leo Scienza, Breunig scored a second. Paul Wanner scored a third goal with a powerful effort, and Breunig, 24, completed the hat-trick with a simple finish after Marvin Pieringer squared.
Griefswalder FC vs Union Berlin
In Griefswald, the Regionalliga Nordost team got off to a strong start by generating two good opportunities, setting up an exciting first half. Die Eisernen gradually warmed up to the situation and exerted control over play, but Griefswald’s tight defense proved difficult to penetrate, and the game ended scoreless at halftime.
In the latter quarter of the game, Union made their breakthrough. Benedict Hollerbach and Yorbe Vertessen executed a fantastic one-two that allowed the former to pinpoint the upper left corner. Bo Svensson and the German-capital club managed to take advantage of a well-executed one-touch pass between the Dutch and German strikers.
VfR Aalen vs Schalke
As the half-hour mark approached, Tobias Mohr’s exquisite set-piece from the left sideline demonstrated Schalke’s early control. Kenan Karaman sent his header past Andreas Wick in the Aalen goal after rising highest in the box. In the 68th minute, Schalke extends their lead thanks to an overcooked back pass that went wrong. In the one-on-one situation, Tobias Mohr stayed alert to the chance, came in behind, and maintained his cool. Die Knappen easily move to the next round.
FC Ingolstadt vs FC Kaiserslautern
In just three minutes, the visitors took the lead thanks to an assault on the left wing by Aaron Opoku. Jannik Mause was the first to receive his cut back, and the striker sent it past Simoni. Halfway through the half, Lautern extended their advantage thanks to a brace from Mause. When Marlon Ritter launched a free kick that struck the wall, Mause was first to react, hammering the ball into the partially empty net.
Following the intermission, Jan Gyamerah was given his marching orders for a second yellow card offense. The numerical disparity caused a few nervous moments for Die Roten Teufel. The match became physical, as Ingolstadt used Ryan Malone’s head to cut the deficit. Despite many yellow cards, the Rhineland-Palatinate club managed to score enough goals in the first half to progress.
