New Delhi: The central government is expected to bring in a law that would make the property registration process online. The act in function is 117 years old. The proposed new law aims to replace the erstwhile Registration Act of 1908. It aims to make all the property-related records online.
According to a TOI report, the new bill aims to make online registration mandatory for documents such as “Agreement to Sell,” “Power of Attorney”, “Equitable Mortgage Arrangements”, and “Sale Certificate.” The Department of Land Resources, under the Union Ministry of Rural Development, has come up with a draft of the proposed bill and has put it in the public domain to seek suggestions from the general public. Among many reasons to propose the bill, one could be that many states have tried bringing changes to their respective property registration processes in the past. Although the law applies to the overall country, state governments could make changes in it provided the consent of the central government. The Land Resources Department says that in view of the increasing use of technology, socio-economic changes, and the growing need for registered documents in the last few years, now, there is a need to create a system that keeps future needs in mind.
Online Property Registration
If the bill is passed, all the records of property and various other documents related to it will be registered online. This would make it easier for the general public not to carry the hard paper documents for government-related work. Digital records would be kept for future references.
Another big change it would bring is that the process of presenting and accepting documents online will also be made digital. The Aadhaar card will be used to verify identity, but this will be done with your consent. If a person does not want to share Aadhaar, then other methods have been kept for him so that the identity can be verified.
The added advantage of the proposed new system will be that it will be linked to other government record-keeping departments, such as land records, municipal data, etc. This will make the exchange of information faster and more accurate.
India is poised to revolutionize its property registration process with a new bill replacing the century-old 1908 Registration Act.This digital shift aims to improve efficiency, integrate with other government databases, and create a more streamlined and accessible system for citizens.
