New Delhi: Novak Djokovic was the favourite to win the Australian Open title for a record-breaking 11th time. The Serbian legend defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals to set up a semi-final match against Alexander Zverev. But after losing the first set against the World No.2, he decided to withdraw from the clash due to an injury and was subsequently booed by the fans at Rod Laver Arena.
Djokovic was also in visible pain during his quarterfinal victory against the Spaniard in the quarterfinal but fans accused him of faking the injury, including legend John McEnroe. During the post-match conference, he revealed that he had sustained a muscle tear, and later posted a picture of his scan on social media. Some media reports also claimed that he would be out of action for a couple of months due to a torn hamstring, and would make a comeback at the French Open.
Serbian legend to make early return
According to a Sportal report, Djokovic is set to make an early. He was in Belgrade last week where he received the necessary treatment and therapy for his injury. The Serbian legend is reportedly feeling better and has decided to make his comeback at the Qatar Open, although he hasn’t started training yet. However, he is expected to travel to Doha to adapt to the conditions and prepare for the ATP 500 tournament.
Djokovic won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 but since then he hasn’t been able to win a single Grand Slam title. There are also a few rumours that the Serbian tennis star might retire after this season. In a recent interview with GQ Sports Djokovic revealed that his father is pressurizing him to retire.
“I feel like people are already writing my tennis obituary. The media, the fans… and I don’t know if he’ll like me saying this, but I’ll say it anyway: the first one doing it is my father” said Djokovic to GQ Sports.
