New Delhi: Two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra recently made some shocking revelations as he admitted doping is a big problem in Indian athletics. Neeraj, who clinched a silver medal in men’s javelin throw at the Paris Olympics last year, is one of India’s most successful athletes of all time. Neeraj became the first Indian athlete to win back-to-back gold and a silver medal at the Olympics after his Paris Olympics feat last year.
Neeraj has become the latest poster boy of Indian athletics courtesy of his tremendous success across major tournaments in the world. However, India has failed to capitalise on the success of the javelin star in producing other athletes who can win laurels for the country at the highest level. Neeraj believes doping is a major reason behind India’s failure to produce elite athletes.
The 27-year-old, who has won nearly every major tournament in his career so far, revealed in an interaction on Lallantop that doping has become a huge problem among Indian athletes. He urged the athletes to stay away from performance-enhancing drugs and instead focus on their training and diet to make it big.
“Nowadays doping is a big problem in India among our athletes. I would like to tell them that once doping is in the mind, it gets hard in the future. They are unable to play at that level,” Neeraj said in an interview on Lallantop.
“They think that only doping can get them performance, but that is not the truth. It is their hard work and self-belief, proper guidance from the coach will take you forward,” he added.

Neeraj also made a plea to the coaches of the Indian athletes to ensure the players remain away from any sort of drugs and be careful of what they are eating outside. The double Olympic medallist believes curbing the doping issue in Indian athletics can help in improving India’s performances at the highest level.
“I request the coaches to not tell them that doping will help them and keep them far away from it. I feel if this improves, our level of sports will become better,” Neeraj added.
